Nov. 25, 2016 – Twenty days to deadline, and what am I doing? Adding new scenes. Oh, yes, I am. And deeply into the cheesy music phase of writing, too.
Some Sentences, Nov. 23 – Pie. That is all.
Nov. 23, 2016 – I could draw a bunch of shaky analogies as to how crafting the perfect sentence is like making the perfect pie crust, but that would involve way too much BS. At some point today, some writing will get done. But this time of year, the pies take priority. Crust is key. This recipe from the New York Times’ Melissa Clark works every time. Pay no attention to the amount of butter. Because pie.
Nov. 22: Some Sentences resumed, and a disaster
Nov. 22, 2016 – Arrived home from a few days of traveling, and champing at the bit to get back to the ms. Zoomed up to the coffeeshop at 6:40 a.m. – late, late! – only to be greeted by the above. That awful sound you heard this morning? Me, screaming.
Some sentences, Nov. 19 – Imagination
Nov. 19, 2016 – A walk in the woods today with this guy, during which all sort of possibilities arose. Bears. Monsters. Snakes. And with each dire scenario, a way to deal with it. Swords against the bears. Invisibility when the monsters appeared. As for snakes – “If there’s a snake, I want to see it!” That works, too. When do we lose it – not just the imagination, but the ingenuity, too? All this by way of saying, the next time I have trouble dreaming up a plot twist, I’m going to remember my walk in the woods with Charlie. He’d have no trouble at all.
Some Sentences, Nov. 16 – Boom!
Nov. 16, 2016 – I’ve been reworking the ending of Book 5 for a couple of weeks now. Because ya gotta stick the landing. A bookseller once gave me great advice when she noted that she reads far too many books with kickass beginnings, but with endings that feel like the writer just wanted to get the damn thing over with, already. (Believe me, I sympathize.) That was reinforced recently when I read a book by one of my favorite authors – the last couple of chapters were mostly extended passages of dialogue. Really disappointing. I can’t let Lola down. That girl has to land on her feet, not even a hint of a bobble.
Some Sentences, Nov. 14 – Binoculars needed
Nov. 14, 2016 – A month and a day to go before the ms. is due. Not quite to the finish line, but if I squint, I can see it from here.
Some Sentences, Nov. 13 – Writing room
Nov. 13, 2016 – Break Espresso is one of my favorite writing spaces. But location is key. It’s important to get a table along the wall, where the outlets are, and in the back, away from the hubbub (and, in the winter, the blast of cold whenever the door opens) in the front of the room. Today I scored – the very back table along the wall, and just in front of the bakery, where I can see – and smell – the goodies being produced. There are worse distractions.
Some Sentences, Nov. 12 – Straightening stuff out
Nov. 12, 2016 – Me today, untangling a giant plot mess. Slowly, slowly this sucker takes shape.
Some Sentences, Nov. 11 – Do not disturb. Really. Don’t.
Nov. 11, 2016 – Looking forward to a weekend with no demands other than writing and proofing. The sign on the door to my writing room is aspirational. Inevitably, the world will intrude. But a girl can dream.
Some Sentences, Nov. 7 – Countdown
Nov. 7, 2016 – Very hard to concentrate with tomorrow looming. Nonetheless, wrote a quite a few sentences this morning. I hope Lola’s latest travails eventually will prove as distracting to readers as they did to me this morning.
